VICE-PRINCIPAL (JK to Gr 11) Deadline to Apply: Open until filled Place of Work: Amo Ososwan School, 209 Azadi Mikana, Winneway, QuebecEmployee Status: Full-TimeTerm: PermanentStarting Date: ASAPSalary Range: $66,122 to $117,053 based on the QECO category and recognized teaching experience.Benefits: Health insurance, pension plan, cultural holidays, sick and personal leave per department policy, isolation premium, retention bonus, professional development allowance, moving allowance, and subsidized housing (dependent on availability). Summary: Amo Ososwan School is located in Long Point First Nation (Winneway), a proud English-speaking Algonquin community in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Western Quebec. The community is fully accessible by road and situated near the Ontario border. The school serves students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 11, delivering the Ontario curriculum alongside daily Algonquin language and culture programming. The Vice-Principal serves as the primary point of contact for all matters related to student behaviour, attendance, and discipline across all grade levels. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on maintaining a safe, respectful, and positive school environment through active supervision and student engagement. The Vice-Principal’s office is strategically located in the second-floor hallway, providing visibility to support day-to-day supervision. Key responsibilities include enforcing the student behaviour code, documenting behaviour incidents and attendance issues daily, and consistently following up with students and families—often through regular meetings with at-risk families. The Vice-Principal also oversees student supervision during recess, transitions between classes, and in shared common areas. In addition, they lead professional development for teachers on classroom management and restorative practices. While the Elementary and High School Principals are responsible for administration, curriculum, reporting, and human resources, the Vice-Principal focuses on student behaviour, attendance, and school-wide supervision. They also serve as Acting Principal in the absence of either Principal.  Duties:Be the primary contact for all student behaviour, discipline, and attendance concerns from JK to Grade 11.Enforce the school’s student behaviour code consistently and fairly.Track all behaviour incidents and attendance issues (such as absences and lateness) daily, ensuring timely documentation and follow-up.Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and school administration to design and enforce behaviour and attendance intervention plans.Conduct regular meetings with parents/guardians of at-risk students to address issues directly and ensure accountability for improvement.Be highly visible and mobile throughout the school day.Supervise hallways and common areas during all transitions, ensuring staff supervise effectively and students follow routines for safe, orderly movement.Oversee and maintain the school’s recess supervision schedule, ensuring staff coverage and active supervision before the morning bell and at recess.Regularly be outside in the playground and at school entrances to monitor lineups, ensure staff punctuality and duty coverage, report missed duties or absences to the Principals, and support recess supervision.Provide professional development and mentor staff in behaviour management, classroom routines, and student engagement to enhance classroom management skills.Build respectful relationships with students and staff by listening, being approachable, and addressing concerns quickly to help create a positive school culture.Serve as Acting Principal in the absence of either the Elementary or High School Principal.Assist with school-wide safety planning and emergency response protocols to help maintain a safe and prepared school environment.Participate in school events, planning meetings, and communication efforts that support student well-being and success.Mandatory Requirements:Bachelor’s Degree in Education.Must hold a valid teaching certification from a Canadian province or territory, or be willing to obtain the required certification within a set timeframe.PQP (Principal’s Qualification Program) or willingness to complete within a specified period (reimbursement provided).Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).Preferred Skills and Knowledge:Experience in school leadership, student services, or as a vice-principal or in an equivalent role.Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.Demonstrated ability to build trust and respect with students, staff, families, and community members.Knowledge of Algonquin culture and values, and commitment to culturally responsive education.Familiarity with the Ontario curriculum and First Nations education systems.Training in Special Education and Behaviour Management (e.g., AQ courses) is considered an asset.First Nations Schools Principals’ Course, or willingness to complete it within a specified period (reimbursement provided).
