Chief Aranazhi School1 Full Time Position: Junior High Language Arts Teacher Alexis Board of Education is looking for a Language Arts Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year. We are looking for a teacher who can build on the current strengths of our school and is focused on providing a balanced education through the delivery of approved curriculum that is grounded in traditional Alexis Nakota Sioux teachings. Our student population is approximately 140 from grades 7 to 12, our Native language is Nakota Sioux (Stoney) and we are located an hour northwest of the City of Edmonton and 30 minutes from the City of Spruce Grove. The successful applicant will begin duties at the commencement of the 2025-2026 school year; a competitive salary based on qualification, skill and experience will be paid. Position SummaryThe Language Arts Teacher provides instruction to junior high students (Grades 7–9) that develops literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills aligned with the Alberta curriculum. The teacher fosters a culturally responsive, inclusive, and engaging classroom that supports student growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. Key Responsibilities Instruction and CurriculumDevelop and deliver lessons aligned with the Alberta curriculum.Incorporate literacy strategies that support reading comprehension, writing fluency, and vocabulary development.Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and levels of ability.Integrate Indigenous perspectives, land-based learning, and local cultural knowledge where appropriate.Design and assess student work using a variety of formative and summative tools, including rubrics aligned with learning outcomes.Use of google classrooms and other online resources to enhance literacy learning. Assessment and ReportingEvaluate student achievement and provide clear, constructive feedback.Maintain accurate assessment records and communicate progress to students and parents.Prepare progress reports and participate in student-led conferences and parent meetings.Classroom ManagementCreate and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.Implement effective behaviour management strategies that promote responsibility and self-regulation.Support students’ social and emotional growth through positive relationships and consistent routines.Professional CollaborationCollaborate with colleagues to plan interdisciplinary units and literacy initiatives across subjects.Work closely with educational assistants, school social workers, and resource teachers to support student needs.Participate in professional learning communities, staff meetings, and school improvement planning. Cultural and Community EngagementIncorporate local culture, community history, and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) perspectives into classroom learning.Engage families and community members in literacy-based projects and school events.Support the school’s mission of nurturing academic excellence, cultural identity, and student well-being. Qualifications and CompetenciesBachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree with specialization or strong background in Language Arts or English.Alberta Teaching Certificate (or eligibility for certification).Demonstrated understanding of the Alberta curriculum.Strong classroom management and organizational skills.Commitment to inclusive education and culturally responsive pedagogy.Ability to integrate technology and differentiated learning strategies.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Must have a clear criminal record and child-welfare check.AssetsKnowledge or respect of local languages, traditions, or land-based education.Training in literacy intervention programs (e.g., Fountas & Pinnell, Levelled Literacy Intervention, Words Their Way).Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support student wellness.
