Native Education College (NEC) opened its doors in 1967 and became British Columbia's largest private Indigenous College. NEC’s purpose is to contribute to an Indigenous, holistic experience that positions the Indigenous learner to uphold their responsibility and obligations to their family, and nation of origin as autonomous Peoples. NEC provides culturally relevant education and training for Indigenous Peoples to pursue career aspirations and enhance academic goals in alignment with their diverse cultural identities and traditional knowledge. The NEC longhouse offers access to many resources and in-house support that includes cultural and spiritual support, funding, counselling, and career advising from a culturally authentic lens.  Position SummaryNEC is seeking a dedicated and compassionate English Tutor for the Pathways Program. This casual contract role will provide personalized academic support to Indigenous learners, focusing on improving their reading, writing, and comprehension skills. The English Tutor will work closely with students to adapt teaching methods to their individual needs, ensuring that learning is culturally relevant and inclusive. The successful candidate will help foster students' academic confidence and resilience while tracking progress and providing regular feedback.Main Responsibilities:• Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring in English to help students develop reading, writing, and comprehension skills and support the learning in the classroom• Adapt and create teaching materials that are culturally relevant and accessible to Indigenous learners.• Track student progress and provide regular, constructive feedback to students• Collaborate with faculty and other tutors to support the academic success of Indigenous learners.• Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and learning outcomes.• Act as a mentor to students, helping them build confidence and academic resilience.• Assist in developing resources that align with the needs and cultural backgrounds of Indigenous students.Preferred Qualifications:• Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field.• 1-2 years of tutoring or teaching experience, preferably with Indigenous learners.• Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and the unique educational challenges faced by Indigenous students.• Strong understanding of English language teaching methods and strategies.• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.• Ability to provide feedback in a culturally respectful and empathetic manner.• Experience with individualized learning plans is an asset.
