Amo Ososwan School serves Junior Kindergarten to Grade 11 with an Ontario curriculum, daily Algonquin language classes, and cultural and land-based learning. Remedial Teachers provide direct instruction to students with identified learning differences (IEPs), helping to close learning gaps, strengthen foundational skills, and reinforce concepts through one-on-one and small-group teaching. As members of the Specialized Services team, Remedial Teachers collaborate with the Manager, classroom teachers, and outside consultants to support student learning goals, focusing on personalized instruction tailored to each students needs. This is a great opportunity to make the move into special education or to further your experience in the field. The role is open to any licensed teacher, including new graduates, retired teachers, those looking to teach in small groups and one on one settings, and teachers already working in special education. Candidates do not need prior special education experience to apply, but should have a strong interest in supporting students with diverse learning needs. Candidates without special education qualifications will complete the courses required to become a Specialist in Special Education, including Part 1, Part 2, and the Specialist AQ, recognized by the Ontario College of Teachers, as part of their employment, and must agree to complete this training. The school will reimburse tuition for each AQ course upon successful completion. Duties: Conduct assessments to identify learning needs, track progress, and adjust strategies with guidance from the Specialized Services team.Participate in creating, implementing, and monitoring Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that address students specific needs, as part of a collaborative team.Deliver tailored instructional strategies and targeted remedial support to help students with learning differences strengthen foundational skills.Identify and use appropriate learning resources and assistive technologies to support students educational needs.Collaborate with teachers to support differentiated instruction and the integration of students with additional support needs into the general classroom.Develop strategies to support students with behavioral and emotional challenges, ensuring a positive and productive learning environment.Apply trauma-informed practices and support mental health needs by providing or referring students to appropriate services.Encourage student voice and self-advocacy, helping students set and achieve personal learning goals.Maintain accurate and confidential records of progress, assessments, and interventions, regularly updating them to reflect current needs and achievements.Communicate effectively with parents and guardians to provide updates on progress and collaborate on strategies for success.Stay current with best practices in special education and participate in professional development opportunities, including mandatory Specialist in Special Education courses provided during employment.Mandatory Requirements (Minimum Qualifications):Bachelors Degree in Education.Must hold a valid teaching certification from a Canadian province or territory.Candidates who do not already hold OCT certification must be willing to obtain it within a specified time.Must have completed, or agree to complete, the Specialist in Special Education courses (Part 1, Part 2, and Specialist AQ) during employment, with tuition reimbursed upon successful completion of each course.Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).Preferred Skills and Knowledge (Considered Assets):Respectful and open to learning about Algonquin culture and community values, with a willingness to engage thoughtfully and adapt approaches.Experience with students having learning difficulties and/or behavioral challenges, including behavior management strategies.Strong classroom management skills in challenging environments.Ability to use differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs.Experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).Strong communication skills, patience, and focus on student success.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.Knowledge of trauma-informed practices to support student well-being.Experience with restorative practices to resolve conflicts and foster accountability.Committed to ongoing professional development in special education and behavior management.
