Native Education College (NEC) opened in 1967 and is British Columbia’s largest private Indigenous college. NEC contributes to an Indigenous, holistic educational experience that supports learners in fulfilling their responsibilities to family, community, and Nation as autonomous Peoples.NEC provides culturally relevant education, training, and career development while honoring Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural identity, and traditions. NEC’s Learning Centre, Knowledge Centre, Longhouse, Academic Programs, and Campus Services work collaboratively to support learners academically, culturally, spiritually, and relationally. Together, these spaces form an integrated learning environment that bridges formal education with Indigenous knowledge transmission and community-based learning.Position Summary:The coordinator plays a central role in the Grace Mirehouse Story Lodge, a protected Indigenous knowledge environment at NEC dedicated to the preservation, transmission, and celebration of Indigenous knowledge systems. The Story Lodge promotes critical and cultural thought processes by centering Indigenous ways of knowing, reflective dialogue, historical awareness, and relational learning as essential components of Indigenous education and the prevention of genocide.Working collaboratively with the Learning Centre, Knowledge Centre, Program Managers, and Management Team this position ensures that storytelling, spoken teachings, and Indigenous knowledge-sharing practices are intentionally integrated into academic programming, learner supports, and institutional learning outcomes. The coordinator supports learners in developing critical thinking grounded in Indigenous worldviews, cultural identity, lived experience, and community responsibility.This role affirms oral, experiential, and community-held knowledge as academically valid and intellectually rigorous. The Story Space is not a recreational or general-purpose activity space; it is an intentional learning environment governed by Indigenous protocols, designed to support cultural continuity, academic success, and Indigenous self-determination.Main Responsibilities:• Coordinate and support oral storytelling, spoken teachings, readings, sharing circles, and community conversations that align with academic objectives and Learning Centre supports.• Work collaboratively with Program Managers and the Academic Management Team to ensure Story Space programming supports curriculum goals, learner outcomes, and Indigenous pedagogical approaches.• Collaborate respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, storytellers, and community members to ensure Indigenous knowledge is shared appropriately, ethically, and in alignment with academic and cultural standards.• Promote critical and cultural thought processes by supporting reflective dialogue, historical awareness, and Indigenous analytical frameworks within storytelling and knowledge-sharing activities.• Recognize oral and lived knowledge as equal to written and digital resources and integrate these forms of knowledge into academic learning contexts.• Animate Story Space is a culturally grounded learning environment that bridges relational knowledge with formal education, while maintaining academic focus and purpose.• Plan and support programming such as author talks, Elder and Knowledge Keeper teachings, language revitalization activities, community lectures, and knowledge-sharing workshops, ensuring alignment with academic programs and institutional priorities.• Ensure the Story Space maintains its purpose as a site of Indigenous knowledge transmission and critical engagement, and does not function as a recreational, casual, or non-educational activity space.• Uphold Indigenous cultural protocols related to storytelling, listening, consent, and knowledge governance.• Curate, organize, and maintain materials supporting Indigenous knowledge systems, including books, recordings, language resources, community-created materials, film, and music, in coordination with Learning Centre and Knowledge Centre priorities.• Facilitate learner access to knowledge in oral, visual, written, and digital formats, strengthening connections between experiential learning and academic achievement.• Build and maintain strong working relationships with Indigenous communities, NEC staff, faculty, students, Program Managers, and academic leadership to support integrated educational planning.• Support community-led use of Story Space while ensuring alignment with NEC’s academic mandate and institutional learning goals.• Contribute to NEC’s institution-wide vision of knowledge centers as living, relational, and academically integrated environments grounded in Indigenous governance and cultural continuity.Preferred Qualifications:• Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems, oral traditions, and cultural protocols.• Experience in libraries, cultural spaces, education, or community-based programming.• Ability to support critical and cultural thinking grounded in Indigenous worldviews.• Strong facilitation, listening, and relationship-building skills.• Cultural humility and respect for Indigenous consent and knowledge governance.• Experience working collaboratively with academic teams or educational leadership.• Strong organizational and communication skills.• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a unionized environment.• Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is an asset.• Must be able to pass a criminal record check.T
