Reporting to the Head of Science and working collaboratively with the broader Science Department, the Science Lab Technician plays a key role in supporting exceptional teaching and learning through the preparation, organization, and safe delivery of engaging, hands-on laboratory experiences. This position contributes to fostering student curiosity, scientific inquiry, and a strong culture of safety across the Science program. Laboratory Safety & ComplianceMaintains safe laboratory practices and ensures compliance with school, provincial, and regulatory safety standards, including WHMIS, WorkSafeBC, and chemical handling/storage requirements.Oversees the safe storage, labeling, handling, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with regulatory guidelines.Maintains and updates Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical inventories, and laboratory safety documentation.Conducts regular safety inspections of laboratory spaces, equipment, eyewash stations, fume hoods, fire extinguishers, and emergency procedures.Supports incident prevention and documentation related to laboratory safety.Chemical waste disposal and compliance.Support for Teaching & LearningCollaborates with faculty to prepare and set up engaging laboratory experiences aligned with curricular goals across Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science.Assists teachers in piloting, adapting, and troubleshooting laboratory activities to support effective student learning.Provides in-class support for laboratory activities when required, particularly for complex or high-risk experiments.Supports experiential, inquiry-based, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities within the Science program.Supporting students with personal passion projects including experiments for Science Fair. Supporting our students and teachers with the STEM project for our G9 Project WeekEquipment, Systems & Resource StewardshipMaintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots scientific equipment and coordinates repairs or replacement when required.Develops and maintains organized systems for laboratory inventory, equipment tracking, and consumables forecasting.Supports annual departmental budgeting by monitoring supply usage and identifying future equipment and resource needs.Maintains laboratory organization to ensure efficient, accessible, and well-functioning learning spaces.Student Support & CommunityFosters a culture of safety, curiosity, and scientific inquiry among students.Supports students in developing safe laboratory practices and confidence in experimental work.Contributes positively to the broader life of the school community through participation in Community Flex, Advising, Co-Curriculars, etc. Required qualifications Undergraduate degree in Science.Minimum 3 years experience working in the laboratory as a laboratory technician. WHMIS certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and chemical handling.Excellent management, organizational, interpersonal and relationship skills.Commitment to work cooperatively with faculty and students.Strong IT skills with attention to detail for administrative tasks.Canadian residency and legally entitled to work in Canada.Preferred qualifications and experiencesBachelor of Education in secondary education with teaching experience at the secondary level.Certified by the British Columbia Ministry of Education.Experience supporting secondary school science laboratories (highly desirable).Familiarity with digital inventory systems and Google Workspace.Our “Must Haves”Respect, dignity and inclusion for all members of the community and to support a safe learning environment in the studiosCollaborative mind-set and courageous approach to adversityDemonstrated communications skills (oral and written) Creative “out-of-the-box” thinkerFlexible and adaptable and embraces change Proven work ethic with utmost integrityEnthusiasm, eagerness and genuine interest in all aspects of the schoolÂ’s successSelf-awareness, with a desire for constant self improvement (goal-oriented)This is a Full Time Permanent position, starting August 28, 2026.We offer professional development opportunities, competitive salaries, a generous benefits package, including RRSP, Personal Days, access to an Employee and Family Assistance Plan, and access to a Health Spending Account, health and wellness initiatives, along with one of the most beautiful locations in Canada to work! The hiring range for this position is from $46,606 to $52,433.
