Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Band Administrator and the Education Director the Principal is a key member of the First Nation's Education Department, and oversees instruction at our elementary school. Job Related Duties:Ensure the education activities are aligned with the Provinvial Curriculum and conducted according to the policies and recommendations of the Chief and Council of the North Sprit Lake First Nation.It is incumbent of the Principal to create a sense of community in the school setting, engage the students, staff, parents, community members, Chief and Council, and other North Spirit Lake First Nation agencies in the school program;The Principal must;Develop, maintain and manage an effective and efficient education administration system; Provide leadership to promote clear consistent expectations that focus on successful educational outcomes for all studentsDevelop and/or enhance Education Department program policies and school curriculumDevelop, manage and control the Education Department's annual budget (work with funding with Band Management and our Financial Managers)Provide supervision to Education Department staffDevelop and maintain positive and effective relationships with external partnersTo follow the guidelines and spirit of the North Spirit Lake First Nation Education Department Mission StatementTo manage a wellness system that is dedicated to supporting the whole studentFostering a supportive environment that promotes strong relationships among staff, students, and families, Implementing meaningful, engaging instructional practices that develop students ability to manage their own learning, Developing habits, skills, and mindsets that build students social, emotional, and academic competence, Creating an integrated system of school supports that includes extended learning opportunities and community partnershipsTo remain current of any changes or trends in the Ontario Education systemTo treat each employee in a fair and equitable mannerTo maintain high expectations, standards and excellence in educationTo register the students and ensure that the teacher keeps proper attendance records in the register, and to establish and maintain the Ontario Student Record (OSR) files for the students; and to expedite the transfer of OSR's when a student leaves and the other school sends a letterhead request for the recordTo organize a school calendar for the current school yearTo prepare in consultation with the education staff a timetable for instructional periods, supervision duties of the staff, and to ensure no conflicts in certain areas of study but not limited to such areas as gym time, library time,To act as a resource for teachers on student evaluationRead and approve all letters of correspondence involving the education department.To ensure that all curriculum materials and resources in use at the school are based on the Ontario Curriculum or the North Spirit Lake First Nation Cultural Practices and TraditionsTo supervise issues related to bussing and work closely with the bus driverTo ensure accountability regarding student and staff progress regarding educational matters, supplies and equipment, the school building, and school groundsTo provide professional guidance for the members of the teaching staffTo encourage and ensure that teachers keep regular contact with parents/guardians and that the contact is base on positive communication cyclesTo hold regular staff meetingsTo promote staff professional development by attending educational conferences and workshops according to the needs of budgetTo be responsible for the advertising, posting, short listing, contacting, and interviewing of candidates for employment with the North Spirit Lake First Nation Education Department Requirements/Qualifications:A post-secondary degree in the field of education and a Principal certification and/or willingness to work towards a Principal's certification with 3-5 years of experience in a management position. Current Ontario Teacher's Certificate in good standing an asset.Working knowledge of Ministry Curriculum and Assessment Documents an assetExperience working within a First Nation educational setting Working knowledge of government policies, programs and curriculumsDemonstrated human resource and financial management skillsExcellent written and oral communication skills.Strong computer skills.A sound understanding of Indigenous culture and First Nation education issuesAbility to work in a unique cultural environmentExcellent interpersonal skills; be a positive role modelMust possess a valid Ontario's drivers licence and be insurableEmergency CPR and First Aid CertificationClean Vulnerable Sector Police Check
