Special Ed Teacher-Orientation and Mobility

Gilbert Public Schools invites applications for the following position: Special Education Teacher-Orientation and Mobility Location: Special Education Department Purpose Statement: Orientation and mobility (O&M) are part of the educational process that prepares students with visual impairments to travelindependently and safely. O&M is one of the nine areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) required to be evaluated for students with visual impairments. The itinerant O&M specialist travels to the students' assigned schools and/or home to provide direct and/orconsultative services relating to visual impairment. These services enable the students to travel safely, efficiently, and independently intheir home, school, and community environments. The students’ range in age from birth through 21 years. The students may or may nothave additional disabilities. The cognitive levels of the students range from severely impaired to gifted and talented. Many studentswith visual impairments are totally included in their neighborhood schools. Others are in special programs in their neighborhood schoolsor at various campuses throughout the district. Community-based instruction is assumed and is a critical component of the O&Mprogram. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Skills are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing jobconditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accuraterecords; planning and managing programs/grants; and operating standard office equipment, including pertinent software applications.Knowledge is required to perform advanced math; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials,and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Ability is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; andconsider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances;analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required towork with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize avariety of types of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem- solving is required to analyze issues and create actionplans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment issignificant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups;maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and working with detailed information/data.
